KUALA LUMPUR: A "must read" book for students of Malaysian history was launched yesterday, examining the contributions of the Chinese community to nation-building.

Malaysian Chinese and Nation Building: Before Merdeka and Fifty Years After -- Vol 1, looks at the post-independence era with the emphasis on the country's formative years. It is divided into three sections: an introduction, historical background and economic perspective.

"The book is a must-read for anyone planning to study the history of Malaysia," said National Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Deputy Minister Teng Boon Soon in his speech.

He praised the Centre for Malaysian Chinese Studies for publishing the 500-page book, the result of a discussion between the centre's academic committee and the former National Unity, Culture, Arts deputy minister and Heritage to commemorate the country's golden jubilee.

"We are working on the second volume of the book, which will touch on cultural and political themes," said centre chairman Dr Lim Chong Keang.

The books are on sale at the centre at RM90 (hard cover) and RM60 (soft cover) each.
